Frog and Toad in Grasshopper Class

One of my favorite book series to read to children is the Frog and Toad series, by Arnold Lobel. Frog and Toad are forest neighbors and good friends. Lobel's stories celebrate nature, the changing of the seasons, humor, and friendship.

Recently, the Grasshopper Class thought about what new adventure they'd like to see Frog and Toad get up to. Here are their ideas:

"I want Frog and Toad to look at the stars."

"I want Frog and Toad to play at the park."

"I want Frog and Toad to skate on the ice."

"I want Frog and Toad to climb up Mt. Fuji."

"I want Frog and Toad to look at pictures."

"I want Frog and Toad to have a snowball fight."

It's been great fun getting to know Frog and Toad in Grasshopper Class.

Insects and bugs

This month in Ladybug class we learned about insects and bugs.

Many people think that insects and bugs are the same thing, but they're not!

Insects have:

* Six legs

* Three body parts

* Two antennae

An ant is an insect because it has six legs, three body parts (a head, a thorax and an abdomen ), and two antennae.

But a spider is NOT an insect. A spider has eight legs, two body parts and no antennae. A spider is a bug! Its scientific name is an arachnid.

We learned many interesting things about insects and bugs and also talked about how it is important to respect insects and bugs even if we think they're yucky. Insects and bugs are living things and we shouldn't squish them just because we think they're icky.

What insects do you like? The students in my class like butterflies and ladybugs. They also like roly poly bugs. They didn't like the pictures of spiders, worms or centipedes. Are there any insects of bugs that you dislike?

In New Zealand, we have a BIG insect called a weta. When I was a little boy, I would sometimes find a weta in my backyard crawling along the fence.

Isn't it cool?

Let's learn more about insects and bugs in the future!

Birthday Party

Thank you.”

The Magic of Indoor Waterplay

Sun on WhatsApp 2.17 The Magic of "Indoor Waterplay" Sun on WhatsApp 2.17

There are times when the weather is too hot to leave the school

but, that doesn't stop the summer magic.

Can you guess what we did?

iPhoneImage.pngiPhoneImage.png

iPhoneImage.png

We fished out different sea creatures!

iPhoneImage.png

We did it with a spoon and a cup!

iPhoneImage.png

First, we had to ask for the tools.

"Spoon please!"

"Can I have a cup too!"

iPhoneImage.png

They really wanted to help each other fish out the creatures.

What a great team work!

iPhoneImage.png

"Look!! I got an orange!"

iPhoneImage.png

You read it correctly! We also had a chance to fish out fruits and colorful coins!

They were excited and very proud of what they did.

Until next time!

Grasshopper Lego Party!

In Grasshopper Class, one of our favorite rainy-day or too-hot-day activities is to play with Lego.

Lego are super-fun to make things with and to exercise our creativity. They also promote hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, and math skills.

For us, though, they are also a great way to build our speaking skills. We work together to build our designs, so we have to use phrases like:

-"May I use this piece?"

-"Can you find...?"

-"Do you need this...?"

-"I'm looking for..."

-"Let's put these together."

A Lego party is a great time for students to use their speaking skills in a low-pressure situation, to work together and have fun. And the students make some pretty fantastic creations!

We love Lego!

Morning Glory

English Pocket

"Soil" "Water" "Sunlight"
