Fall is Just Around the Corner

This summer has had several heatwaves over the past few weeks in August. Thank goodness for the AC, right? Well, as the heat dies down, the fall season is approching closer and that means cooler temps and low humidity. As I see it, I believe autumn is the greatest season throughout the whole year in Japan. What would be your ideal climate to live in? -Xico

Grasshopper Class's Funny Animals

August's Monthly Theme was "Funny Animals".

In Grasshopper Class, the students used their imaginations to dream up a new animal made of two animals put together! They drew pictures and wrote about their new animal creations. It was really fun! Have a look!

"This is an elefly. It lives in a hotel. It can move round and round. It looks big. It has a tail. It likes to eat meat and rice. He is so nice. He will copy everybody. He will hop in a puddle. He will listen to everybody. He wants to dance always. He will go to the park, and he will hunt everywhere and find a big giant egg."

"This is a fishperson. It lives in the ocean. He can eat fish. He likes to look at the sky. He has hands and feet. He can move at the park. My mom is scared of the fishperson. He can walk to the ocean and walk a long time."

"This is a crab monster. He eats houses and people and garbage. He lives in a house in the wild. He has a neck and horns and long hands. He can carry big rocks and juggle balls. He likes to sleep in a bag. He looks like a superman. He likes to sing and dance."

"This is a rhinoleon. It can stay very still. It lives in the desert. It eats leaves. It looks like a chameleon. It has a horn. It likes to kick the ball. It is a girl. She is cute. Everybody likes rhinoleons. She can drink water. She can grab with her tail. She likes to see the sun. Mom laid an egg and it hatched."

Thanks for reading about our new funny animals!

I'm going to Disneyland this weekend

Hi guys,

I'm going to Disneyland on Sunday.

I've only been to Disneyland one time before and at the time my daughter was too small to go on most of the rides. I don't know what the best rides are. Someone needs to help me!

What's your favorite ride at Disneyland? Which ride do you think I should go on?

If you come to English Pocket on Friday you've got to let me know! I don't like scary rollercoasters but I'll go on one if you dare me to.

Let me know on Friday!

Slow Down!!!

Did you know that kids have the same energy and endurance levels as pro athletes?

Think of that next time you are chasing after your kids.

A new study from the Universite Clermont Auergne, in France, explains that kids have

"greater energy levels than professional endurance athletes" and an "impressive recovery time."

So kids can play, play, play, and they won't get tired, but perhaps sleepy.

Here are some English phrases to slow down your little ones.

"Slow down, please."

"Let's take a break."

"You're so fast! Can you try to be slow? Show me!"

"Do you want to drink some water?"

"Let's pretend to be elephants--slow and calm."

Let us know if these phrases work. -Stephanie :D

Old Norse words used in everyday English

Hi everyone,

Today we had a special event at English Pocket where we learned about my family history.

One of the topics we discussed was Vikings. Vikings were seafaring people from Scandinavia in the North of Europe. They spoke a language called Old Norse. Many common, everyday Old Norse words were adopted into the English language during the Viking Age. We call these type of words "loan words."

Here are some examples of loan words from the Old Norse language:

skirt

skin

gun

ball

husband

sister

sale

steak

bug

wing

dirt

cake

scare

take

run

race

hit

leg

eye

kid

anger

happy

...plus many more!

Though English didn't borrow as many words from Old Norse as it did from French or Latin, the everyday nature of these words make the old Viking language an important part of modern English vocabulary.

Even the days of the week have a connection to the Old Norse language. Thursday is named after the Norse God of thunder, Thor, and literally means "Thor's Day."

So the next time you sing the days of the week song, remember that Thursday is "Thor's Day"!

夏のスペシャルイベント

★夏のスペシャルイベント★

8月も下旬になりましたが、まだまだ暑い日が続きますね。

English Pocket上北沢校では、23日(木)、24日(金)にかけて夏のスペシャルイベントを実施しました!

たくさんの方にご参加いただきありがとうございました。

2日間の様子をお伝えいたします!

第一弾 Hawaiian Event

Let's  learn about Daniel's origin!

Bangers and mash"
